BLOOD TRANSFUSION

The blood transfusion department is located on three sites at, or nearby, the hospitals we serve. It provides a comprehensive service to meet the needs of all patients at each site. One of the laboratories carries the Blood Establishment license providing services to the Macmillan Cancer Centre in central London.

The departments provide a range of services such as routine blood grouping, antibody screening, antibody identification and titration, red cell phenotyping, monitoring of maternal red cell antibodies as part of antenatal screening programme for the prevention of haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) and determination of foetal maternal haemorrhage (FMH).

We also provide standard blood products via automated remote issue blood fridges in key clinical areas as well as serological crossmatching to support key services such as the solid organ transplantation (liver & renal), vascular and general surgery, obstetrics, and intensive and urgent care.

In addition we provide specialised blood components for transfusion (white cells, plasma products, albumin, fractionated blood components and clotting factors) to support specialist areas including haemato-oncology/bone marrow transplantation, ABO mismatched renal transplants, patients undergoing apheresis (red cell and plasma exchange) and other specialist areas.

All laboratories are compliant with Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and also hold the IBMS pre- and post- registration training approval for completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio and Specialist Diplomas, as well as being accredited under Clinical Pathology Accreditation whilst transitioning to ISO 15189 under the programme of UKAS assessment schedules.

HSL is a progressive partnership between The Doctors Laboratory, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (the Royal Free London) and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH)
